Inside Tephra the Lava Dragon.

Background story: No one has ever managed to get close to a lava dragon, they are greatly feared with an incredible bad temper and won't hesitate to blow fire. Lava dragons lay their eggs within the lava pits of a volcano, the eggs will only hatch once the volcano erupts, shooting the eggs out with the lava. The intense heat and power will cause the shell to break and a baby lava dragon will be born. Lava dragons can be found living in volcano craters located in Volcano Alley in the Valley of Fire.

Only my third doll from my new dragon sculpt 2.0, I wanted to try something a little different. Initially I had the idea of using a crackling effect to make the painted areas look like lava, however as I started painting, I changed my idea to have the lava colouring in between the scales while the scales themselves would be black, giving the effect if cracking lava. I then had the idea to combine felting into my work to try and achieve a crackling effect to the body.

Tephra has a resin face and paws that were cast from an original sculpture hand crafted by me. His body is made from Mongolian faux fur which was designed and sewn by me, he has a wire armature inside making him fully poseable, his face is painted in acrylic paints. His wings are made from a faux suede with a wire armature so they are poseable.

Tephra is approximately 30x15cm head to tail.

This little guy will be up for grabs in my Etsy shop this Friday between 9-10am AEST. Alternatively you can check me out on my social media pages below. Also check out my Society6 and Redbubble shop for prints and more.
