Inside Niji the Rainbow-tailed Raccoon

Rainbow-tailed raccoons are cheeky, happy and inquisitive little creatures. As they love to eat sweet colourful things, their tails change colour with their diet, they otherwise have a pure white coat. These raccoons usually steal treats from houses and shops, coming up with an elaborate plant with their gaze (group of raccoons).

Rainbow-tailed raccoons are found throughout Wunderkammer, although majority are found in the Central Highland region where they can steal sweets from merchants.

After a couple of raccoon dolls into the new sculpt, I knew this raccoon wanted to be a colourful character, but I wanted to steer away from the stereotypical 'rainbow'. I remembered a doll I once created when I first started making dolls, and decided to revisit the idea. The first doll with this colour scheme was a lemur, he had a white coat with a rainbow tail and rainbow painting on his face. I changed it up a little for the raccoon and went for a more realistic approach, drawing inspiration from an albino raccoon. I steered away from my usual black around the eyes and nose, and used pink. I still opted to include the raccoon bands around their eyes but did so in a light brown colour.

Niji has a resin face and hooves that were cast from an original sculpture hand crafted by me. Her body is made from thick faux fur which was designed and sewn by me, she has a wire armature inside making her fully poseable, her face was furred by hand and painted in acrylic paints.

Niji is approximately 25 x 12cm head to tail.

Niji will be up for grabs in my Etsy shop this Friday between 9-10am AEST. Alternatively you can check me out on my social media pages below. Also check out my Society6 and Redbubble shop for prints and more.
